Free Domains for Students via GitHub Student Pack

If you're a student and you're not using the GitHub Student Developer Pack, you're leaving free domains on the table. Real ones. The kind that normally cost $20 to $70 a year.

Here's what's actually worth grabbing.

First, get approved

Apply at education.github.com/pack. You'll need:

• –A school email or a photo of your student ID
• –To be 13 or older
• –An active GitHub account

Approval takes anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days.

The domains worth grabbing

.me via nc.me (Namecheap) gives you one free .me domain for a year. Perfect for personal sites and portfolios. This is what I use for shahriaravi.me.

.tech via get.tech gives you one free .tech domain for a year. Great for technical portfolios or dev flavored projects.

.dev, .app, .site, .online, .studio, .design via Name.com gives you one free domain from this list for a year. Pick whichever fits your project.

That's it. Three providers, up to three free domains. Don't grab all of them just because you can.

The one thing nobody tells you

Every free student domain needs a credit or debit card on file. Auto renew is usually on by default.

Turn off auto renew immediately after registering. Otherwise you'll get a surprise $30 to $50 charge in twelve months. Set a calendar reminder for month eleven so you can decide whether to keep it or let it go.

My recommendation

Get the .me first. It's the most versatile. If you're building something more technical, add a .dev or .tech. Skip the rest unless you have a specific project waiting for one.

Point it at Vercel or Netlify, deploy something, and you've got a real site with a real domain in under an hour.
